He sat in the Baltimore City Fire Department doctor’s office, eighteen months after his injury in the line of duty, absorbing what the doctor had just told him.
“You don’t work here anymore,” he had said.
Not believing the words, the firefighter responded, “What do you mean?”
“Your papers are at the pension office. Go to City Hall, Rm. #410, and talk to somebody.”
Somehow, he made it outside. He felt like he couldn’t breathe. His first thought was to call his wife.
When she answered, the firefighter took a deep breath. The only thing that would come out of his mouth was, “Beth . . .” Then he forced the doctor’s message through his lips, “They don’t want me anymore.”
Without a pause, she said, “I love you. And I will always want you. Come on home.”
On the way home, it hit him like a ton of bricks. It’s over. The last fourteen years flew through his head saving lives every day . . . , the intense rush of the work . . . , the relationships built. . . . , the friends lost on the job . . . , the funerals attended . . . , the accidents and tragedies experienced . . . , the kids saved – the kids . . . .
How could it be over?
As it turned out, it was not over. God had another plan for him, one through which he could continue to save lives every day. This former firefighter became an educator, an educator with a burning mission to save lives. With renewed passion, purpose, and perseverance, he devoted the next years of his life to saving the lives of the students he encountered as a teacher, an administrator, and a leadership coach.
It had been an eventful journey from firefighter to educator – one full of unexpected challenges, highs and lows, and surprising lessons along the way. One thing he discovered was that as an educator, no less than when he was a firefighter, he had daily opportunities to save lives. Throughout the years since he made the change in professions, he has had opportunities to save lives each and every day.
He still feels the intense rush of the work every day. He treasures the relationships he has been able to build. He has experienced funerals, accidents, and tragedies among his students. He has lamented those he has lost. But in the end, his work has been continually ignited by those lives he has been able to save every day. Saving Lives Through Education is, indeed, his life’s mission.
The series, Saving Lives Through Education, provides dramatic, often hair-raising and heart-throbbing, parallels between saving lives as a firefighter and saving lives as an educator. The first in the series, “Saving Lives Through Education Ignite Focus,” shares the story of Lt. Al Thompson’s injury in the line of duty and the launching of his journey from the firefighting profession to the education profession, with parallel stories from both careers. For today’s educators, it offers inspiration, renewed commitment, as well as practical instructional strategies for finding the focus necessary to save the lives of children.
Drawing upon the life-threatening challenges and life-saving strategies that he experienced as a firefighter, Thompson and co-authors, Ann Fontaine-Lewis and Susan Nancarrow, share vivid, real-life images of firefighting and classroom scenes to demonstrate the power of focus for saving lives.
For teachers, administrators, and all others in the education profession who want to realize the true power of their profession and gain practical action steps for saving the lives of the children in their schools, Saving Lives Through Education Ignite Focus,” is a must-read! Equally, the stories and insights in this book transcend occupations to provide inspiration for all professions.
